If you are looking for a place to buy plants that have reasonable
prices and a wide variety of plants to choose from, then I would recommend going
to Home Depot for you gardening needs. I have worked at Home Depot for the past
four summers as a plant vendor and the prices and products that Home Depot
provides is hard to beat. If you had to choose from Walmart, Lowes, or Home
Depot, you should go with Home Depot one hundred percent. If you want to know
my feelings about Walmart and plants, be sure to check my blog post that I did
on that subject just a while back. Here are some benefits to shopping at Home
Depot for your gardening needs.
The first benefit to shopping at Home Depot for your plant
needs is the accessibility. Home Depot is a huge company that can be found all
across the U.S., Canada, and Mexico with 2,286 stores. The main problem I find with
local nurseries is that there aren’t many of them. The closest nursery to my
house is thirty minutes away. It usually comes down to it being an inconvenience
to go the local nurseries because it out of the way. Home Depot on the other
hand is only ten minutes from my house and is a much easier drive. This is
probably true for most people because there aren’t many local nurseries, but there
is a lot of Home Depot’s around to help you with your gardening needs.
The second benefit to shopping at Home Depot for your plant
needs is the pricing of the products. I find that shopping at local nurseries
tends to be more expensive. They do provide more of a personal experience when
shopping with them but the price doesn’t always match up to how much the plant is actually worth. They do
care for their plants more too. Home Depot on the other hand doesn’t have the
man power to keep up the amount of plants they have. If you are going to a
local nursery, you will get a more personal experience with plants that are
taken care of everyday, but the prices tend to be higher because of those
reasons. Home Depot keeps their prices fair for the plants you are buying. If
you are buying a one gallon plant, the price is around eight dollars. The one
gallon plants are smaller plants that are just starting to grow and have a
while before they reach full maturity. The next size of plant that you can
purchase are two gallon plants. These plants are priced around twenty-two dollars
and are a medium size. They aren’t fully mature plants but they are big enough
to take up some space in your garden. Also, you can still watch them grow,
which is always rewarding to see. The next size is a three gallon plant. They
are priced at thirty dollars and are slightly more mature than the two gallon
plants. I would recommend going with the two gallon plants just because there
is not a very noticeable difference in the plants actual size. The only real
difference is the pot size. Lastly, they even have plants that are five gallons
and up. The prices of these range from fifty dollars to one hundred and fifty
dollars. Five gallon and up plants are very mature or completely matured; these
plants are perfect for the customer who doesn’t have the time or the patience
for the plant to reach its full size. Compared to nurseries, these prices are
amazing. Also, these are brand named plants the come from well known growers;
First Edition, Proven Winners, Knock Out Roses, etc. Lastly, Home Depot is
always putting their stuff on and off sale. If you wait to the end of June, most
of the shrubs are fifty percent off. Keep a close look at your local newspaper
because that is where they’ll tell you when things are going on sale.
The Third benefit to buying your plants from home depot is
the variety. If it is a decently common plant, Home Depot will have it for you.
To give you a better understanding as to how many different plants they have,
there are three different plant vendor companies that provide all the plants.
Each vendor has a different variety of plants to choose from. There is the
Master Piece vendor. They work with the annual plants that die off during the
winter. These plants are meant to be potted in pots and used as décor for your
window sill or your patio. If you are looking for something that is colorful
and ready to put on display, then the annual vendor will have the plant for
you. Another vendor is the Hampshire vendor. The types of plants that they
provide are flowering perennial plants. These plants will come back every year
and provide a lot of color for your garden. The last vendor is the Stinchcomb vendor.
This is the company that I worked for and the plants that we provided are
shrubs that are perennial or annual. I would love to name all of the plants
that we have but I don’t think anyone has enough time to read all of them. Some
annuals that we provide are tropical plants. Hibiscus, canna, mandevilla,
gardenia; just to name a few. The tropical plants provide a lot of color and
give off a Hawaii vibe. The only problem is that they die in the winter because
they can’t handle the cold. For the perennial plants, we have even more to
choose from. From roses, to hydrangeas, to burning bush, and even arborvitaes.
These are the type of plants that will make your garden or landscaping pop. The
perennial shrubs also tend to be easier to take care of. As you can see there
is a lot to choose from. If you need help finding a plant or understanding more
about a certain plant, don’t be afraid to ask the Master Piece vendor that wears
red shirts, the Hampshire vendor that wears dark blue shirts, or the Stinchcomb
vendor that wears grey shirts.
Home Depot is the place that I would recommend to anyone
that is looking to find a wide variety of plants at a reasonable price. I hope
this gave you a better understanding of what Home Depot provides when it comes
to plants.
